Birmingham City #BCFC is a proper football club. By that I mean that you probably don’t support them as a ‘johnny come lately’ glory hunter. Birmingham City carries our 2nd City’s name and the club occupies a proper inner-city site within (very uncomfortable) walking distance of New Street and Moor Street Stations.
They were founded in 1875 around the Small Heath area of the city and their ground, St. Andrews reflects religious associations of the past.
If supporters who were not born in the city, or lived there, were asked to leave at half time, the crowd would not noticeably drop. Before matches, the thumping rhythms of celebrity supporter Jeff Lynne & ELO blast out around St Andrews. Roy Wood, UB40 and Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight are all bluenoses.
But what have they got to show for it you may ask? Well they have six League Championships. These are 2nd Division (Championship) 4 times; Third Division (third tier) once and the immediate Post War Football League South.
They won the Football League Cup in 1962 / 1963 beating their local rivals from Aston over 2 legs. In 2010 / 2011, they won again beating Arsenal at Wembley. They also won the Football League Trophy in season 1990 / 1991 & 1994 / 1995.
Not the most glittering of trophy cabinets, maybe, but add to these three more domestic cup semi-finals and there has been something to cheer over the years.
But did you know this?
Forget Celtic, Manchester United, Liverpool et al, Birmingham City were the first British Club to compete in a European Final. They contested the Final of the Inter Cities Fairs Cup in both 1960 and 1961. They were beaten semi-finalists in the inaugural tournament staged between 1955 and 1958.
Recently, my good friend Colin asked me to list his small but very significant collection of Birmingham City #BCFC programmes on my site. And now each item is up and available for purchase.
Below, I’m providing links to some of the most interesting programmes – mostly semi-finals and finals.
It’s a great collection, I hope you have fun browsing the items and buying them.
