Luton v Notts C 1977

Programme of the Week Luton Town v Notts County 23rd April 1977

Every week (sometimes more often) Ill pick a football programme from my collection that relates to a game being played in the next few days.

This Saturday 22nd April 2017 sees Luton Town v Notts County in a League Two match at Kenilworth Road. Almost exactly 40 years ago, the same fixture was played in Football League Division Two (now The Championship).

 So, what was happening then?

Just looking at the cover, which that season features a formal team shot, the Futcher brothers stand out. Without opening the programme, Im also guessing at a young Ricky Hill in the photo as well.

The programme costs 15 pence and comprises 16 pages. The cover photo is in colour, but the rest of the programme is black and white, with a rather strange orange and black for the pages on the visitors.

The Luton Town Manager is Harry Haslam, and David Pleat is his Assistant Coach. Stockport County legend Danny Bergara is Lutons youth team coach. Their team line-up includes some very evocative names.

Milija Aleksic was the goalkeeper and the back four included Paul Price, who has his own special place on this website. Weve mentioned the Futcher brothers, but Jimmy Husband, Lil Fucillo, John Aston and David Geddis would all have been useful in attack.

As for County, they were managed by Ron Fenton and coached by Colin Addison. Included in their squad were David Needham, yet to join neighbours Forest, Martyn Busby the brother of former Luton Town stalwart Viv and Arthur Mann, who once had the distinction of being the highest priced defender to move from Scotland to England, when he left Hearts for Manchester City.

This weekend (2017) three points will help Luton consolidate fourth place in League Two and give them an advantage in the first round of play off matches. For Notts County, a mid-table finish looks nailed on and there is little to play for except pride.

Luton Town v Notts County 1977

It was all different in 1997! County are third and pushing for promotion to Division One. With four matches to go, Chelsea lead the table on 50 points. Only two points for a win in these prehistoric days. The mighty Wolves are second on 49 points, with two games in hand. County sit third on 46 points (same games as Chelsea). Forest are a point and a game in hand behind them.

Luton were 6th on 43 points and a win would potentially move them above Bolton and Forest to within a point of the visitors.

And Luton Town did win! In what sounds like a cracking game, the home team ran out winners 4-2.

As a result, Notts County fall away and end the season in 8th place. Luton Town rise to 6th after the win and hold that position to the end of the season.

Finally, the league is won by the Wolves, with Chelsea second and Nottingham Forest in third
